Start with the full length of the flight
A straight rail is intended for an uninterrupted straight run. Ask the assessor to check the whole flight, upper and lower landings, doorways and usable stair width. The seat, your seated position and clearance for others matter alongside the rail.
Try the chair you will actually use
At a demonstration, sit down, place your feet, fasten the belt and try the armrest control. Ask how the seat swivels at the top and how you would stand onto the landing. Compare manual and powered features where they solve a practical difficulty for you.
What happens when the chair is parked?
Ask where it charges and whether a rail end crosses a door or walkway. If a folding rail is proposed, ask how it operates and what it costs. Try folding the seat and footrest instead of assuming those movements will be easy.
New, reconditioned or rental
These are worthwhile questions for a straight flight, but availability is provider-specific. A reconditioned chair still needs the right rail and fitting. A rental should be compared using setup, minimum term, monthly charges and collection—not just one monthly figure.
Ask for these details in writing
- A measured layout showing rail ends and chair parking.
- The exact model, seat options and stated capacity.
- Installation scope, any site preparation and written total.
- A demonstration, user instructions and named service contact.
Before a Louisville-area assessment
For a Louisville assessment, describe the whole route: the doorway near the first step, every turn, and the space where you would get off upstairs. If the route is outside, have the assessor check the entrance and door swing as well as the steps. Service in southern Indiana is a separate coverage question, not something to assume from a Louisville listing.
